FAQ
Just how does the Dremel rotary tool work?
The rotary tool doesn't work like other tools. Most other tools rely on brute force to muscle through jobs. The Dremel rotary tool uses speed. Very high speed! It actually spins at rates up to 35,000 rpm. That's more than ten times as fast as most drills on their highest setting.
In fact, at 35,000 rpm a Dremel rotary tool with a high-speed cutting bit can make an incredible 4,600 cuts a second! Almost a quarter million cuts a minute! Remember speed does all the work - you just guide the tool.
Which rotary tool should I use?
Within the current UK Dremel range there are basically three types; battery, corded and cordless.
Battery
- These models accept four AA batteries and can be used for small applications. There are no current models available in the Dremel range.
Corded
- There are two main models;
300 series
and the
400 Series Digital
The variable speed
300 workshop kit
in a durable tool box offers great value for money and is the most popular corded Dremel rotary tool. The 140w 'daddy of the range' 400 Series Digital is the ultimate corded rotary tool featuring two button electronic speed selection with digital LCD readout.
Cordless
- The older 7800 (9.6volt) has been replaced by the
8000 lithium-ion (10.8volt).
Offering better battery life (6x longer than standard NiCd batteries) and higher rpm (5-35,000) it's the latest and most popular tool of the cordless range.
Shank/Shaft sizes - why do they matter?
Essentially, each tool can use any of the
150 plus Dremel accessories
. The key lies with the shank or shaft size of the accessory. Shank sizes are 0.8mm, 1.6mm, 2.4mm or 3.2mm. Dremel offer two solutions for ultimate flexibility:
Multichuck 4486
- This is a
handy device
which can be adjusted for all shank sizes, it doesn't leave the tool and is used instead of a collet.
Collets
- Collets are sleeves that are tailored to fit one of the four different shank sizes. They can be purchased individually or as a
set of four (4485)
. Changing bits takes longer than using a multichuck.
There are so many accessories, how do I choose?
The best place to start is which an accessory set. Available for specific tasks such as Polishing
(684)
, Cutting
(688)
. Alternatively, the 200 piece accessory set
(704)
or the 100 piece gift tin
(701)
offer good value as opposed to buying individual bits.
What can I do with my Dremel Tool?
Many hundreds of different tasks/jobs/projects can be successfully completed with the correct bit and rotary tool. First, have a look through the
applications
and
materials overview
and then browse some
project examples
. There are many ideas covering areas such as hobby/craft, motoring, DIY, furniture, outdoor and much more. A project start guide is included with each new tool purchased.
